Fig. 01
The wheel
A skeleton caught in a wooden wheel. The grain of the wood and the bones are rendered with the same line, with no solid fill and no gray: only the density of the hatching separates the two materials.
- Thigh
Fig. 02
Plumed helm
A plumed armet rising out of acanthus scrolls. The helm is the shape that comes back most often in his work: full of facets, so full of excuses for hatching.
- Arm
Fig. 03
Sans retour
A three-master under full sail above an engraved banner. The waves are drawn as closed scrolls, as on an old sea chart.
- Thigh
Fig. 04
Hannya
The demoness mask of Noh theater, redrawn as an engraving rather than in the usual Japanese line. The horns and the hair keep the long line, the jaw switches to tight hatching.
- Leg
Fig. 05
Flaming heart
A sacred heart in flames, ringed by a glory of short rays. The muscle is modeled only by the direction of the lines, never by fill.
- Forearm
Fig. 06
The reaper in a tricorn
Death in a tricorn, flintlock pistol and smoke. The most contrasted piece in the selection: this is where neo-engraving accepts massed black rather than line alone.
- Forearm
Fig. 07
Cat in armor
A helmeted cat, plume in the wind. The subject is funny, the execution is not: the same engraving rules as on a serious piece, no shortcuts in the line.
- Arm
Fig. 08
Stork-beak scissors
Dressmaker’s scissors, the real object engraved as it is. The line thins down to the tip of the blade.
- Arm
